One of the exciting things about having the freedom to design and build your own furniture is the exploration of new materials to construct them with. I inherited several wooden street signs several years ago (yes, legally) and set about constructing bedside tables that would be made entirely out of one recycled street sign apiece.

The finished product far exceeded my expectations. Not only did each sign have the right amount of materials for an adequately-sized table, but each table itself becomes a unique study in typography and strong geometric shapes.

Personally I really enjoy the chaotic and weathered finish each sign displays. It’s not something that could be artifically replicated. I consider it an “antique finish” to new furniture.

    I believe firmly in taking unique materials and rebuilding them ("upcycling", if you will) into something better. Take a look at the recycled skateboard furniture and freakbikes and see for yourself. They're all hand crafted in Portland, Oregon, and are pretty awesome.
